Dodgers honored for IAC North softball success

Messenger photo by Britt Kudla: Senior Lucy Porter was one of three Fort Dodge unanimous first team all-IAC North selections.

The Fort Dodge softball team claimed a piece of the Iowa Alliance North Division title for the second time in three seasons this year, sharing it with Ames.

The Dodgers were rewarded with 10 players being named all-division, including unanimous first team status for Lucy Porter, Hope Alstott and Ellie Doster.

Joining the three on the first team were teammates and seniors Ashlyn Wills and Cadence Touney. Senior Meah McCaleb, junior Mae Meyer, sophomore Aubrey Alstott, and eighth-grader Macy Wills each made the second squad, while sophomore Calliegh Zimmermann was honorable mention.

“I am super proud of the girls who made all-conference,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “It was no surprise that Lucy, Hope and Ellie were unanimous, as they all had amazing years.

“You want to get as many as you can on the first team when you’re co-champs. We had a few others who I thought deserved higher (status), but that’s the way it goes sometimes and you end up having to go with what the coaches (collectively) decide.”

Porter, a senior who will play softball at Minnesota State University this the fall, tied with teammate Aubrey Alstott for first place in league play with seven wins. Porter was also first in strikeouts (53), runs allowed (four), walks issued (three) hits allowed (15) and opponents batting average (.120). Her earned run average of 0.60 was second.

Porter finishes third all-time on the FDSH charts for overall strikeouts (621) and fourth in wins (86).

Hope Alstott, who was all-state each of the past two seasons, led the division in batting average (.553), steals (27), runs scored (33) and times hit by a pitch (eighth). She was also third in walks (10) and did not strike out.

Porter and Alstott were both unanimous choices a year ago as well.

Doster, who also did not strike out in a league game, was third in average. Doster was a first teamer last summer as well.

Ashlyn Wills tied for second in divisional play for steals.

McCaleb was second in IAC North games with 22 RBI — tied with Doster — while also tying for second in runs scored at 20. She did not commit an error in the field at third base.

Fort Dodge went 27-13 overall and 14-2 in the IAC North, tying Ames (30-11, 14-2) for the championship.
