DES MOINES — Saxon and Brayden Lyman had the same beginning at the state wrestling meet on Thurday.
Now, they’re hoping for the same ending.
The Eagle Grove senior twin brothers qualified for state in their final go-round, and both picked up early victories in the Class 1A field.
Saxon (43-10) and Brayden (42-10) advanced to the quarterfinals with a fall and a decision inside Wells Fargo Arena, respectively. Saxon upset Edgewood-Colesburg’s eighth-ranked Killian Welsh (41-6) in their 152-pound opener. He recorded the fall in 5:34.
“This is my first time qualifying, and it’s a great opportunity to be down at the state tournament with my brother,” Saxon said. “We have been practicing partners for years, which has made us better.
“I’m happy to make it through the first round, and now I just need one more to place.”
Brayden earned a 7-4 decision over Woodbury Central’s Jake Dennison in their 170-pound match.
“Being down at the state tournament has always been a dream of mine,” Brayden said. “I knew it would be very hard to get down here. I wrestled with my brother everyday during practice and it shows; we’ve gotten better together and we’re finally able to go to state.
“Making it through the first round was an awesome feeling and all I need is one more to get on the podium. Saxon and I have both put in a ton of work and I’m happy that we get to compete together.”
Saxon will face Belevue’s Drew Venteicher (38-5). Brayden will meet Evansville’s Caleb Peach (35-20).
Eagle Grove teammate Joel Mendoza (34-7) lost in the first round, but bounced back with a fall in 43 seconds over Brady Canada of AHSTW to stay alive.
The Eagles are in 11th place with nine team points.
Manson NW Webster
The family trio for Manson Northwest Webster all stayed alive, and are one win away from medaling.
