Gaels run strong at NCC

WEBSTER CITY — The St. Edmond girls track and field team picked up four Top-6 finishes here Thursday night at the North Central Conference meet.

Grace Schlegel was third in the 1,500-meter run for the Gaels, as was the 4×200-meter relay. Naomi Valles finished fifth and sixth in her two distance races.

“There are some positives we can take with us from this meet,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “We will continue to build for next Thursday. That is what we’ve been working for all year.

“The 4×2 ran their best race of the year and had a PR by two seconds, which was exciting to see. We’ll get the girls healthy and be ready to go (for the state-qualifier).”

Kenzie Nolte, Ava Bradley, Breckyn Ulrich and Brianna Saathoff comprised the 4×200 relay that claimed a bronze.

Schlegel posted a time of 5;22.04, as the 4×200 relay went 1:53.59. Valles, meanwhile, was fifth in the 1,500 (5:39.58) and sixth in the 3,000 (12:11.42).

St. Edmond’s junior varsity 4×100-meter relay of McKenna Kvale, Mia Bella Johnson, Nolte and Schlegel placed first.

Behind 10 event titles, Algona took home the team crown, as Natalie Johnson won both the 100 (12.39) and 200 (26.04). Macy Knapp claimed the 800 (2:23.65), Sienna Fehr the 400 hurdles (1:08.14), Jada Roberts the high jump (5-3) and Maya Lentz the long jump (16-4.25).

The Bulldogs placed first in four relays, as Lillian Allie, Lentz, Alissa Engel and Johnson won the 4×100 in 50.65; Allie, Lentz, Bella Fairbanks and Johnson clamed the 4×200 in 1:49.22; Charli Dodds, Rose Kitzinger, Regan Jensen and Knapp won the 4×400 in 4:16.97; and Kitzinger, Chelsy Vicente-Gomez, Jensen and Knapp scored gold in the 4×800 in 10:23.00.

Reagan Haynes was second in both the shot put and discus, Knapp placed second in the 400 and Algona was second in the shuttle hurdle relay.

For Webster City, Izzy Grossoehme was first in the 400 in 58.91 and anchored the sprint medley relay to victory in 1:50.83. Kali Hartnett, Izzy Weinschenk and Tessa Hansen joined her on the relay.

The shuttle hurdle relay for the Lynx also placed first with Briley VanDeer, Hartnett, Tristyn Wright and Hansen finishing in 1:10.77. VanDeer added a second in the 100 hurdles.

Avery Fisher won the 3,000 (11:02.03) to lead Humboldt, as the Wildcats also won the distance medley relay in 4:26.75 behind Payton Elman, Gracey May, Katie Sievers and Brynn Malo. Aubry Fisher added seconds in the 1,500 and 3,000, as Malo was the runner-up in the 800.

The Gaels will head to Colfax for a Class 1A state qualifying meet next Thursday. Joining St. Edmond will be AGWSR, Ankeny Christian, Baxter, Colfax-Mingo, Collins-Maxwell, Colo-Nesco, East Marshall, Empigo Academy, Joshua Christian Academy, Madrid, Martensdale-St. Marys, Melcher-Dallas, Montezuma and Woodward Academy.
