MARSHALLTOWN — The third-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team continued their dominance over Marshalltown with a sweep here on Monday night.
With temperatures soaring over 90 degrees, the Dodgers still handled the Bobcats for the 36th and 37th consecutive time by scores of 8-0 and 14-1 in five innings.
Fort Dodge (22-8 overall, 10-2 in the Iowa Alliance Conference North) plated two runs in the first, second, third and sixth innings, belting out 10 hits in the opener. Hope Alstott and Calliegh Zimmermann each had two hits, with Alstott, Zimmerman, Lucy Porter, Meah McCaleb, Ellie Doster and Macy Brown all driving in a run.
Alstott and McCaleb both scored twice. McCaleb and Ava Wessels both stole three bases.
Porter earned the win, striking out seven while allowing just three hits and no walks over seven innings.
“It was miserable to play in this heat,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “But nobody complained and we came in, moved runners, scored runs and got the job done.”
The nightcap saw the Dodgers score five in the first and fourth before adding four more in the fifth. McCaleb, Porter, Aubrey Alstott and Mackenzie McIlrath all had doubles with McCaleb again stealing three bases.
Porter was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, McCaleb was 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs, and Hope Alstott had two hits and scored three times.
Macy Brown added three RBI. Ashlyn Wills drove in a run and scored.
Eighth-grader Aubrey Alstott picked up the win inside the circle. The Dodgers have not lost to the Bobcats since 2012.
“Lucy and Aubrey pitched great,” Adams said. “I am so proud of them for not getting caught up in worrying about the heat and just going out and competing.”
Fort Dodge heads to Waterloo East Tuesday for a doubleheader before returning home to Rogers Park for a twinbill Thursday vs. Ames with the conference title likely on the line.
