Wednesday’s Class 1A consolation game was a microcosm of the season that took place for the St. Edmond softball team.

One night removed from battling top-ranked Martensdale-St. Marys to a tough 1-0 loss, the Gaels were bested by Remsen St. Mary’s at Rogers Park, 10-9.

This marked the final game for St. Edmond (23-13 overall) seniors Anna Kolacia and Sylvia Hess, as Kolacia reached base twice, scoring a run while driving in another.

“I felt like we definitely showed that we are one of the Top-8 teams in 1A,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “We battled with the No. 1 team and we played a team with one loss coming into state to a one-run game.

“I’m proud of the girls. Nobody is ever happy with losing, but we were in two close games with two very good teams.”

Faith Shirbroun, a freshman, hit her seven home run of the season, while Payton Bradley, Josie Harvey and Shirbroun each drove in a pair. Ansley Oswald, Kaili Henning and Harvey all had two hits, while eighth-grader Myrah Lemon was 3-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and a run.

But after taking a 6-0 lead behind three runs in the second and three more in the fourth, the troubles started. Remsen St. Mary’s (26-2) plated five in the fourth to get back into the game, and answered a three-run seventh by the Gaels with five more.

“Remsen St. Mary’s just had some timely hits and they were able to get the best of us,” Shirbroun said. “We came out after a tough loss (Tuesday) and got on the board quickly. We just couldn’t contain them for seven innings.”

Claire Schroeder led the Hawks with three hits, while Mya Bunkers, Halle Galles, Octavia Galles, Hallie Bonkers and Gracyn Schroeder all had two each. Bonkers drove in three and Bunkers had two RBI.
