Algona tops Gaels, moves to 8-2 on year
ALGONA — The fifth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team allowed Algona a big inning here Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs plated five runs in the fourth on their way to an 8-1 victory in North Central Conference action.
Allison Trunkhill tossed a one-hitter for Algona (8-2 overall, 4-0 in league), striking out eight with three walks. Jillian Burns was 4-for-4 with three runs scored, as Makenna Elsbecker had a home run.
“We just couldn’t get going at the plate,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “We had so much momentum against Clear Lake, but credit Algona, because (Trunkhill) kept us off balance.”
Toryn Helle had the lone hit for the Gaels (10-2, 4-1), as Greenlee Crimmins scored in the second to give them a 1-0 lead. Sophia Schlienz, Rihanna Myers and Liv Andrew each reached on a walk.
Reagan Haynes had three hits and drove in a run, as Elsbecker finished with two RBI.
