No. 10 Dodgers sweep Waterloo East at home
The 10th-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge baseball team lit up the scoreboard here on Friday evening at Ed McNeil Field.
Behind home runs by Will McElroy, Kolton Schiltz and Caiden Fraher, the Dodgers wiped out Waterloo East. Scores were 11-1 in six innings and 17-2 in four.
McElroy had a homer in each game, while Fraher’s two-run shot ended the nightcap early in favor of Fort Dodge (18-4 overall). The senior also stole two bases in the opener and scored twice in game two.
“Just a special moment for a senior like Caiden,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “He doesn’t always get to play consistently, but when his number was called, he stepped up.”
McElroy, Schiltz and Fraher each drove in three during the onslaught that included the Dodgers scoring in all four innings. Jaxson Dencklau scored three times, with Schiltz, McElroy, Tanner Peterson, Cal Pederson and Reggie Pederson all doing the same.
“You never want to get to a point where you are counting on a home run to provide you with the offense you need,” Utley said. “But it’s great for the kids to see swings like that. It also shows we’ve got the power to do it.
“I thought we did a nice job of putting the ball in play all over the field. We also put (East) away when we had the chance, which was great to see.”
Bennett Nekvinda and Dencklau combined on a no-hitter, striking out three on the mound.
Peterson also swiped a pair of bases and drove in a run, with Dencklau, Mason Frevert, McBride, Kingston Phillips, Bo Marsh and Davis Underberg each adding an RBI. Nolan Ahrens had a pinch-hit double.
In the opener, Marsh quickly tied it at 1-all with an RBI that scored Schiltz. McElroy’s two-run homer in the third gave the Dodgers a lead they would never surrender.
Schiltz went deep an inning later with his own two-run shot, as Fort Dodge added three more in the fifth and ended it early with two in the sixth.
Pederson settled down after allowing the run in the first, striking out 10 over five innings of work while allowing just four hits.
“Reggie had a great outing,” Utley said. “It’s hard to remember that he’s just a sophomore, but we know what we’re going to get from him, so that’s going to be really important here down the stretch.”
McBride had three hits and scored twice with a steal; McElroy drove in three; Underberg had two doubles and drove in a pair; and Cael Adams had two RBI, a run scored and a steal.
Fort Dodge will take on Iowa City West Saturday at 10 a.m. from Rogers Park as part of the Iowa Central Invitational.
