A familiar area school greets the Fort Dodge girls basketball team in a Class 4A regional contest on Wednesday.
Webster City visits the Dodger gym for a 7 p.m. tip, with the winner heading to Humboldt on Saturday night for a Region 1 semifinal. And while the names and players are recognizable to each other on both sides, the programs haven’t actually met on the hardwood in 23 years.
Head coach Scott Messerly’s Dodgers carry an 11-9 record into the postseason — the school’s first winning campaign since 2010-11. Webster City is 5-15, with wins in two of its last four games.
Fort Dodge senior post players Paytene Hiveley and Lainey Maehl — both 500-point career scorers — lead the way offensively, averaging 13.0 and 12.8 points, respectively. Hiveley is also grabbing 9.8 rebounds per night, with Maehl at 9.3. Maehl is shooting 55 percent from the field, 71 percent at the free throw line, and paces the Dodgers in assists.
Freshman LJ Maehl is next in line at 9.8 points and 5.2 rebounds. Hiveley and the Maehl sisters all contribute over two steals per game as well.
The Lynx are balanced, with senior Chloe Andersen, senior Alley Odland, senior Livia Kasch and sophomore Olivia Gallentine all scoring at nearly the same pace. Kasch, Odland and Gallentine are the main rebounders for Webster City. Odland leads the squad in assists.
Humboldt is 14-7 and awaiting the winner. The Wildcats defeated the Dodgers and swept Webster City during the regular season.
Top-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes (18-3) is the No. 1 seed in the bracket. The regional final will be Tuesday in the gym of the highest remaining seed.
