Schroeder breaks ESC school record with 53

SAC CITY — Camden Schroeder had a night to remember for the East Sac County boys basketball team on Tuesday.

Schroeder scored a school-record 53 points, leading the Raiders to a 92-57 victory over Pocahontas Area in a Twin Lakes Conference matchup.

Schroeder, a 6-foot-5 forward, knocked down seven three-point attempts, while grabbing 14 rebounds, dishing out five assists and blocking five shots.

East Sac County (12-2 overall, 8-1 in the TLC) has now won 11 consecutive games.

“You could tell Camden was locked in and was not going to be stopped,” ESC head coach Todd Bontrager said. “Fifty-three points in one game is currently the highest single-game point total of any individual in all of Iowa high school basketball this year.

“Cam was face-guarded most of the game, with a second defender running at him. But he was still composed enough to keep it locked in. He could not be contained.”

Schroeder scored all of his points from the field, making 23 of 29 shots. He didn’t attempt a single free throw.

Former all-state standout and ex-South Dakota State University starter Reed Tellinghuisen held the previous program record with 51 points in a 2013 game.

Schroeder is now shooting 58 percent from the field and averaging 23.8 points, 10.6 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 3.7 blocks per contest this season.

The 53 points is tied for the 69th highest single-game output in Iowa high school boys basketball history.

“Our team continues to evolve and improve each game in a different way,” Bontrager said. “The first quarter was very explosive for us, as we knocked down seven threes and held a high-scoring Pocahontas team to six points.

“Dylan Meredith started us off with a couple of early (triples), then Camden added four more. Gavin Vondrak hit one, too. We had 26 points at the end of the first quarter.”

The Raiders, who are tied with South Central Calhoun and trail Alta-Aurelia by a half-game for the TLC lead, are scheduled to return to action on Thursday — weather permitting — at West Bend-Mallard. East Sac County then hosts Southeast Valley on Friday.
