No. 24 Tritons split with NIACC
MASON CITY — The No. 24 Iowa Central softball team secured a split in the final ICCAC road doubleheader of the season here Wednesday vs. North Iowa Area.
After winning the opener, 2-1, the Tritons dropped the nightcap, 6-1.
Freshman Josephine Moore provided the heroics in the first game, belting a two-run homer in the fourth to put Iowa Central (37-13 overall, 22-10 in league) up. She finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, adding a double.
“The first game was a grind,” ICCC head coach Bo Tjebben said. “Josephine had the big hit and we got great efforts from our pitchers.
“In the second, our pitchers did a great job again, we just couldn’t catch a break. NIACC made some great defensive plays and got the timely hits.”
Kyra Kain had a hit and scored a run while St. Edmond graduate Lauren Gibb added a hit. Inside the circle, Jillian French went five-plus, striking out six with just three hits allowed.
Scarlett Gordon recorded the final five outs without allowing a hit to secure the save.
In the nightcap, NIACC struck first with two runs in the first and plated two more in the third and two in the fifth. Iowa Central got on the board in the third with an RBI by Fort Dodge Senior High grad Cadence Touney, who finished 2-for-3 with a walk.
Kain had three more hits, including a double, as Natalie Rasmussen finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Iowa Central returns to action Saturday when they host Northeast for sophomore day at Rogers Park. They conclude the regular season Sunday vs. top-ranked Kirkwood.
Start time for both doubleheaders is 1 p.m.
