Weather forces changes in Drake schedule
DES MOINES — With thunderstorms and rain headed for Drake Stadium, officials at the 116th running of the Drake Relays adjusted the schedule for Thursday’s action.
One high school event, the boys discus, was moved to Saturday morning.
Several competitions did take place, with a handful of area and Iowa Central athletes faring well.
Triton standouts Abbigail Hutchinson and Chakib Cherkaoui Rhazouani competed in open distance events and placed in the Top-5. Hutchinson was fourth in the women’s 3,000-meter Steeplechase in a time of 10:51.00. Rhazouani was fifth in the men’s 5,000-meter run.
Nebraska senior Cami Merickel won the Steeplechase in 10:32.34. Micah Wilson was the race winner in the 5,000 in 14:00.20.
Wilson competed unattached, but is currently an athlete at Wisconsin.
Greene County’s Trevon Keely was seventh in the high jump, as North Union’s Max Heinen tied for eighth. Keely cleared 6-4 and Heinen got past 6-2, with Waukee’s Ajak Malaul winning after clearing 7-0.
Halee Hauswirth from Pocahontas Area finished 15th in the shot put with a best of 38-7. The senior also had throws of 37-8.75 and 37-8, moving up one spot from her qualifying position.
Burlington’s Kylee Hill was the event winner with a toss of 47-9.75.
Rachel Schany from Emmetsburg, a defending state champion in the high jump, placed 11th in the long jump with a leap of 17-2.25 after coming in with the 24th-best leap of the season. Abby Mecklenburg from Linn-Mar went 20-5.5 for gold.
Schany will be one of a handful of area athletes returning to compete Friday including Colin Johnson of Southeast Valley in the 110 hurdles, South Central Calhoun’s Trisin Gorden in the discus, Algona’s Max Nevitt in the shot put and his teammates Natalie Johnson, Evan Allie, William Weichert and Tate Garman in the 100. The Bulldogs will also run in the ditance medley and 4×200 relays.
On Saturday, Fort Dodge’s 4×100 relay hit the track along with Alex Burger from Southeast Valley in the 400 hurdles and Gavin Weber of Algona in the 1,600 run. Relays from Southeast Valley, Pocahontas Area, Algona and Webster City will also be in action.
