DES MOINES — There was one last thing for Fort Dodge’s Dreshaun Ross to do on Saturday night: find his family.
After becoming the 34th four-time state champion in Iowa high school wrestling history, Ross sprinted into the stands to celebrate with his parents, Amy and Andre, and his siblings. He also did what would now be considered a patented round-off cartwheel into a back-flip celebration for a second straight year as the sold-out crowd gave him a standing ovation.
One streak nearly ended for Ross (35-0), who has beaten every opponent in the first period this season. But the Dodger legend sealed the deal before the clock hit zero, earning a 21-6 tech fall over Brady Hagan (36-5) of Dowling to close the opening frame.
It was the third 21-6 tech fall in the tournament to go along with a 41-second fall for the future Oklahoma State Cowboy.
Ross finishes his career as a winner of 137 consecutive matches and a career mark of 145-2. He joins Brody Teske (2015-18) as the only four-time titleists ever from Fort Dodge.
“Dreshaun is a special athlete and just a special person,” FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson said after his final match as head coach, ending a successful 21-year stint at his alma mater. “He loves his teammates just as much as he loves wrestling.
“His humility as the top-ranked recruit is unmatched — it’s been a treat to watch him for four years.”
Full coverage from Ross’s championship and everything from Saturday’s action will be in Monday’s Messenger.
