Fort Dodge boys drop heartbreaker late

DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge boys suffered a heartbreaking 47-46 loss to Des Moines Hoover here Friday night.

In a back-and-forth contest, a putback by Brody Maehl was waved off at the buzzer by officials.

The Huskies (1-10 overall) scored the game-winning points on two made free throws by Diyon Berry with 6.6 seconds left after a go-ahead basket from Taevon Feeley put the Dodgers (1-12) up with less than 10 seconds to play.

“We played some great defense,” FDSH head coach Willie Williams said. “We competed and played hard. We told the guys to not be sad. Losing is tough, but they played so hard; it just didn’t go our way.

“Don’t blame the refs or anything. We just needed one more stop or one more rebound for the game to go our way.”

Hayden Zuspann launched a 3-pointer in the final moments that Maehl grabbed off the rebound. However, the shot attempt by the sophomore post player came a split second after the final horn sounded.

Zuspann knocked down four triples to lead Fort Dodge, scoring 17 points. Maehl finished with 10 points, Taevon Feeley added eight points and 10 rebounds, Tytrell Mosley contributed seven and Reggie Pederson four.

Maehl and Feeley had put the Dodgers ahead with clutch baskets in the last minute, but Hoover answered both times. Fort Dodge got into serious foul trouble in the final frame, and two free throws by Diyon Berry with six seconds remaining wound up being the game-winning points.

For the Huskies, Isaac Fandeh tallied a team-high 13, as both Berry and Muize Musa each scored 11.

The Dodgers head to Waterloo East on Tuesday. Earlier this year, Fort Dodge fell to the Trojans at home, 57-45.

Varsity tip on Tuesday is slated for 7:45 p.m.
