Tritons on the move at national golf
PLYMOUTH, Ind. — Two Iowa Central men’s golfers made big moves up the individual leaderboard here on Thursday at the NJCAA Div. II Championships.
Francis Lockwood moved to a tie for 20th while Eric Zuniga climbed 19 spots after 54 holes of action at Swan Lake Golf Resort.
The fourth and final round takes place on Friday.
Both Lockwood and Zuniga had rounds of 74, including an eagle by Zuniga on the par-5 fifth. Lockwood recorded one of his two birdies on that hole, as he shot a 35 on the front-nine.
Zuniga had three birdies on the back, helping him post a 36.
August Nord is tied for 7th, Peyton Walker is tied for 82nd and Cael Nixon is tied for 130th. Walker had two birdies on the day.
“We played really well (Thursday) compareative to the last two days,” ICCC head coach Kris Graewin said. “We needed a fourth score that didn’t come to fruition but the golf course played two shots harder on average and a lot of our guys shot up the leaderboard.
“We need one more good day and hopefully we have an All-American or two.”
Overall, Iowa Central sits in 15th, but is just one shot back of Jefferson State and two from Wallace. Northeast, an ICCAC rival sits 11th and is nine strokes clear of the Tritons.
Murray State holds the overall lead ahead of Heartland and Meridian. Connor Tallentire of Murray State has a three-round total of 6-under and is atop the leaderboard.
