Triton women set for fresh start

The Iowa Central women will be under the direction of Graham McFall this coming season.

McFall, who has NCAA Div. I experience under his belt, put together a roster loaded with international players and new faces.

Before joining the Tritons, McFall was an assistant coach at Portland State along with serving as the head coach of Portland Community College. He also made stops at Lincoln University, Indiana University Kokomo, IUPUI and in Australia.

“It’s been an awesome experience so far here in Fort Dodge,” McFall said. “The community has been so welcoming, and I really appreciate the connection between the college and the community. The support Iowa Central gives to athletics also makes this a special place, and I’m truly honored to have the opportunity to lead this program.”

Last year, Iowa Central finished 7-21, including just two wins in the ultra-competitive ICCAC. Ashlin Jacobsen, Sharon Greek and MacKenna Bush return from that team.

Jacobsen started 19 games and made 26 appearances, averaging a team-high 11.6 points per game. Greek played in 26 and made five starts, as Bush saw action in one.

“We’ve been playing 10-deep so far in the non-conference season, which has been exciting to see the depth from this group so far,” McFall said. “Trista Ohlmeier is an athletic, versatile forward who can score both inside and on the perimeter. Shakani Murray, who is originally from New Zealand, joins us after transferring from NCAA Div. I Chadron State. She’s an exciting point guard who can get downhill, create for others and push the pace.

“Sharon has been making her mark defensively; her ball pressure and length make her a real pest on the defensive end.”

The Tritons split a pair of games in West Burlington last week, falling to Lincoln Land before blowing out Lewis and Clark.

“Our group has done a great job early on of buying into the new system,” McFall said. “From a culture standpoint, they’ve been intentional about building relationships and setting a strong foundation which will be key as the season goes on.

“We’re excited to compete this year. We believe we have the talent and depth to battle every night in the ICCAC. Our focus is on building daily and being process driven, but we also have clear goals of finishing in the top half of the ICCAC and to put ourselves in position to make a run in the regional tournament.”

Iowa Central makes its Hodges Fieldhouse debut this Friday vs. Central Lakes-Brainerd as part of the Great Western Classic, following that up with a date vs. Metropolitan.

McFall will be assisted by Hailey Hohenecker, who was a multi-sport standout in high school before playing basketball at the University of St. Thomas, University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Chicago State University.
