Iowa Central dominates Top-10 mat matchup
IOWA LAKES — The third-ranked Iowa Central wrestling team opened their dual season with a lopsided 44-4 victory over No. 10 Iowa Lakes on Wednesday night.
The Tritons took all but one bout versus the Lakers. In those nine victories, the Tritons won seven by bonus points. Iowa Central earned five falls.
“We were very aggressive and attacking each match,” said ICCC head coach Luke Moffitt. “At 125 (pounds), 157 and 165, we were down to start the match, but our guys came from behind.
“We were wearing on guys and eventually broke them. We definitely had an attacking style for sure. We put the hooks in them and got the fall.”
The biggest match of the night was an All-American showdown at 149, with Iowa Central’s fifth-ranked Matt Roche and Iowa Lakes’ No. 4 William Penn. Penn got an early 3-0 lead, but Roche got a reversal and pinned Penn’s shoulders to the mat.
“Roche came out and had a pretty gritty performance,” Moffitt said. “At the beginning of the match, it wasn’t going his way and eventually put the clamps on the guy.
“He’s definitely going to be dangerous and can beat any of those guys. This was his first big test.”
Che Jenkins (133), Levi Johnson (157), Jake Marshall (165), and Damarcus Powe (174) all picked up falls for Iowa Central.
Earning major decisions for the Tritons were No. 4 Umar Ahmad (197) and Zaman Anwar (heavyweight). Tegan Sherk, who is ranked No. 1 at 133 pounds, won by decision at 141. Shane Schwab (125) picked up an upset, knocking off No. 6 Dominic Chimeno.
Iowa Central is back in action on Saturday when they head to Grand View for a tournament with 55 teams. The Tritons will have their home opener on Dec. 5 inside Hodges Fieldhouse against Hawkeye.
