In the early 1980s and again between 2010-15, the St. Edmond boys tennis team put together impressive runs that included multiple state championship performances.

Now it’s the Gael girls dominating at the nets.

Ninth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond remained unbeaten here Friday with an 8-1 victory over South Hardin. The Gaels (7-0 overall) have won nine straight regular season duals, and are 23-2 in the regular season over the past three years.

Seniors Lauren Gibb, Payton Bradley and Cambree Lunn have been varsity regulars during a run that includes an overall dual record of 25-4 the last three years. They were honored — alongside classmates Emily Mosier, Nicole Mosier and Braelynn Rees — at the final home dual of the season at Butler Courts.

“These seniors have meant so much to myself and the program as a whole,” SEHS head coach Shawn Neverman said. “They’ve been the cornerstone to our success, and it’s been so much fun watching them grow into the players they have become.

“We still have a few weeks left together. I hope we can make it as enjoyable and memorable as possible.”

Gibb dropped a tough 8-4 decision at the No. 1 position to fellow senior Abby Teske. Gael teammates Bradley, Lunn, Ava Andrew, Ava Underberg and Abby Huss all picked up victories.

“We had some really close, tough matches,” Neverman said. “Lauren was in a battle with Teske, who is a solid player. Cambree and Ava (Underberg) pulled out close wins.”

Gibb and Bradley, Lunn and Andrew, and Underberg and Chloe Palmer scored doubles victories for St. Edmond.

Bradley improved to 20-5 overall in singles. Lunn is 18-6. Andrew is 14-4, Underberg 13-4 and Huss 14-2 in their careers.

On the season, the six are a combined 32-9, with Huss holding a perfect 7-0 mark.

In junior varsity matches, Jade Rock and Ashlyn Swisher won in singles. Rees and Olivia Andrew prevailed in doubles.

The Gaels head to Pella for an invitational on Saturday to compete alongside Aplington-Parkersburg, Davis Country, Oskaloosa and Ottumwa beginning at 9 a.m. From there, they head to Carroll to play Carroll Kuemper on Monday at Graham Park.

The Knights are the only team to defeat St. Edmond in the regular season over the last two seasons.

St. Edmond concludes the regular season Tuesday at Hampton-Dumont/CAL, where it will try to clinch a third straight North Central Conference title outright. The Gaels, who are also the two-time reigning NCC tournament champions, will then compete in that event on Wednesday in Webster City.

Starting at $4.94/week.
