Gael girls claim six events

CLARION — It was another big night for the St. Edmond girls track and field team, as they secured another automatic qualifier to the upcoming Drake Relays here Tuesday at the Cowgirl Relays.

Mariah Myers, who had already earned the Blue Standard in the shot put, hit the discus mark to win the event and qualify for Drake. The senior had a throw of 136-6 to go along with her winning mark of 40-11.5 in the shot put.

Anna Lursen, who will join her at Drake in the 400, won the 800 and ran on the winning sprint and distance medley relays. Josie Harvey, also on the sprint medley, captured the 100 hurdles.

Faith Shirbroun led off both relays with Sasha Hess rounding out the sprint medley. Brianna Saathoff and Alex Leiting comprised the other two legs of the distance medley relay.

Harvey added a second in the 100 and a third in the 400 hurdles as the Gaels placed fourth overall.

“It was a good night overall,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “We were able to have a lot of PRs, which was awesome. Every girl went out and competed, and that’s what makes this group special and so much fun to coach.

“It was incredible seeing Mariah qualify in the discus. She has worked so hard and is very deserving.”

The 4×800 of Leiting, Naomi Valles, Lily Eslick and Emmersyn Peters placed second, Valles was third in the 400 while McKenna Kvale was third in the 200. Myrah Lemon (100) and Leiting (800) each added a fifth.

St. Edmond runs again next Tuesday in Pocahontas with the Drake Relays beginning next Thursday in Des Moines.

Starting at $2.99/week.
