The Fort Dodge boys swim team competed with an inspired effort here Thursday.
Behind five first place finishes on Senior Night, the Dodgers swept Bishop Garrigan and Des Moines Hoover-North inside the FDSH pool. Fort Dodge topped the Golden Bears, 65-24, and downed Hoover-North, 55-34.
“It was a very tough week for everyone,” FDSH head coach Ashley Beaumont said. “I was glad the athletic boosters provided us with T-shirts to show support for Mr. (Aaron) Miller (the Fort Dodge Middle School assistant principal who passed away last weekend in a car accident). The boys wore them proudly throughout the meet.”
Senior Carter Jorgensen was an individual double-winner, as we claimed gold in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Jorgensen also swam on the winning 200 freestyle relay alongside classmates Evan Cooper, Brady Major and Kael Keith.
Aiden Seagren joined Major, Cooper and Keith on the golden 200 medley relay, and Keith added a first in the 50 free.
Jorgensen clocked a time of 2:04.97 to capture the 200 free by almost seven seconds, following that up with a time of 5:35.96 in the 500 free to prevail by over 30 seconds.
Keith claimed the 50 freestyle in 24.10, while also placing second in the 100 freestyle.
Major added a pair of silvers in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. Seagren was second in both the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke.
The quartet of Jorgensen, Nathan Klocke, Brek Pingel and Seagren earned runner-up status in the 400 freestyle relay.
During the meet, Fort Dodge honored seniors Cooper, Keith, Klocke and Major.
“The boys had a great meet,” Beaumont said. “It’s always fun to win at home — especially on Senior Night.
“I’m so proud of my seniors and the leaders they are for the team, and I am thankful to have seen them grow the past several years. They will leave FDSH with a strong legacy.”
Pingel picked up two first-place finishes in junior varsity races.
For Bishop Garrigan, former Dodger swimmer Matt Besch won the 100 freestyle. Fellow-ex FDSH team member Colin Roberts the 100 breaststroke. The Golden Bears tied with Des Moines Hoover-North, 45-45.
Fort Dodge was set to host the Rusty Garst Invitational this Saturday, but the meet has been called off because of Miller’s funeral.
The Dodgers will return to action on Thursday at Ames against the Little Cyclones and Boone.
