Veit earns silver in 400

DES MOINES — Wendie Veit ran her best 400-meter hurdle time of her career here Friday at the state track and field championships.
The run gave Veit a silver in the Class 2A portion of the meet from Drake Stadium, as she broke her own school record with a time of 1:03.32. Tipton’s Ella Hein was able to hold off the sophomore, winning in 1:02.29.
Veit also finished fifth in the 400-meter dash on Thursday and will conclude the week competing Saturday on the sprint medley relay.
Rachel Schany of Emmetsburg was denied a repeat state title in the 2A high jump, settling for fourth by clearing 5-2. That gave her a third medal this week after placing sixth in the long jump and eighth in the 400.
Like Veit, she will conclude her championships Saturday in the 800.
Pocahontas Area’s Adam Marsh was 17th in the discus with a best of 148-5. The girls 4×200 relay of Danica Dreith, Halee Hauswirth, Natalie Sommerlot and Khloe Mefferd finished 12th in 1:47.50.
Manson Northwest Webster’s Thatcher Oswald closed out his high school career in the 400 hurdles, placing 18th in 57.27.
In prelim action, the Pocahontas Area girls 4×100 of Dreith, Hauswirth, Sommerlot and Mefferd placed 15th, Libbie Veit of East Sac County was 18th in the 100 hurdles and Tyce Jenness from Emmetsburg finished 21st in the 110 hurdles.
