Tritons primed for WS
ENID, Okla. — The ninth-ranked Iowa Central baseball team opens play at the NJCAA Div. II World Series here Saturday morning.
The Tritons (50-10 overall) take on No. 24 Monroe College in the opening round from David Allen Memorial Ballpark.
Winners of both the Region 11 Tournament and North Plains District title, Iowa Central has won five in a row and owns a 5-1 record in neutral site games. Head coach Eric Stein’s club has put together a historic offensive season, hitting .370 as a team with 182 home runs.
George McIntyre, the reigning ICCAC Player of the Year, leads the way, as the future All-American is hitting .495 with 30 home runs, 97 RBI, 132 runs scored and 28 steals. Sawyer Stein has 28 homers, 110 RBI, 95 runs and 15 steals, Tate Perrin has hit 21 homers and stolen 23 bases, and Bryson Carpenter has 18 home runs.
Sam Sejnoha, Will Specht, Ben Jones, Wyatt Myers and Bennett Burke all have at least 10 homers.
As a team, the Tritons have been issued 475 walks on the season, scoring 818 runs with 139 doubles and 17 triples.
Isaiah Brennan, the conference pitcher of the year, is 8-2 with 89 strikeouts, Maddux Gast owns an 8-1 record with three complete games, Maddox Sullivan is 5-1 with four complete games and Carter Giesen is 5-1 with a team-high 99 strikeouts.
Monroe (37-8) clinched its bid to the World Series by besting Mercer County for the East District title. The Tribunes will be making an 11th appearance all-time, having finished third in 2008.
Not a single player on the team has hit more than four home runs, as they have a total of 16 on the season. Monroe is hitting .355 as a team, as Michael Sardou leads with 54 RBI and Braedon Reina has 42. The two have a combined 31 doubles and 14 triples, led by 11 from Sardou.
Connor Osier is 9-1 with 95 strikeouts in 58 innings on the mound.
Last year, the Tritons reached the semifinals before falling to eventual national champion Pasco-Hernando. They went 4-2 at the World Series, with both losses coming to Pasco-Hernando.
Iowa Central is the No. 7 seed and Monroe is the 10th, as the winner advances to take on second-seed Pearl River on Sunday at 1 p.m.
