Another win for St. Edmond girls

WEBSTER CITY — For the first time since the 2014-15 season, the St. Edmond girls basketball squad has a three-game win streak on its resume.

The Gaels finished off a perfect week with a 48-44 victory here Friday night at Webster City. This marked the team’s first North Central Conference win of the season.

St. Edmond (5-7 overall, 1-4 in the league) started things off with a 48-37 victory over Eagle Grove on Monday. They followed that up with a 17-point triumph at Manson Northwest Webster Thursday, then showed no signs of fatigue last night in topping the Lynx (2-11, 0-6), who had won their last two.

“We are just so proud of these girls as coaches,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “It’s exciting to see what they have done this past week, and very exciting to see what is to come.”

After Webster City rallied to make it 45-42 late in the fourth, Chloe Palmer calmly stepped to the free throw line and sank both shots. After a miss by the Lynx, Payton Bradley sealed the deal at the charity stripe.

Palmer led the way with 14 points as Josie Harvey added 12 and Abby Huss had 11. Anna Lursen chipped in seven and Payton Bradley four.

Locked in a battle through the opening 16 minutes, the Gaels turned a 17-15 lead at the half into a 12-point advantage with 2:45 to go in the third after scoring nine points in the first two minutes of the quarter.

Huss, a sophomore, knocked down three consecutive 3-pointers to extend the lead for St. Edmond.

“That was big coming out of the half,” Tracy said. “We had tired legs after physical games the last two nights, and we needed that momentum boost.”

For Webster City, Evie Davis scored 14 points. Tristyn Wright added eight.

“We did a nice job of collapsing inside the making them take shots outside,” Tracy said. “I thought we did a good job defending (Olivia) Gallentine, who is a player that can score points in a hurry.”

St. Edmond will try to extend its streak to four when the Gaels finally return home, hosting No. 12 (Class 1A) Coon Rapids-Bayard on Monday at 7 p.m. They close the regular season with five of seven in the SEHS gym.

“I asked the girls if they even know where their white (home) uniforms are anymore,” Tracy laughed. “It’s been a while since we’ve been at home, but it’s exciting to be going into the weekend with three in a row and the chance to play there again next week.”
