Dodger duo places in Top-5
LAS VEGAS — Fort Dodge state medalists Dreshaun Ross and Knox Ayala both placed in the Top-5 at the United States Open Wrestling Championships in the Expo at World Market Center on Sunday.
Ross, a four-time Dodger state champion and an Oklahoma State University recruit, was edged by Iowa State commit Coby Merrill in the U20 freestyle finals at 125 kg.
Merrill is a California native and was the No. 2 seed in the bracket. Ross, the top seed and No. 1 heavyweight recruit in the nation, hadn’t lost to Merrill in their previous folkstyle meetings despite giving up over 50 pounds to the future Cyclone.
Ayala was fifth in the U17 bracket at 48 kg (105 pounds). The FDSH freshman defeated Brody Compau of Michigan in the place match, 13-9.
Ayala was third at state for the Dodgers this past February.
Brody Teske – like Ross, a four-time prep state champion for Fort Dodge – placed fifth in his first live action in over two years at 57 kg (125 pounds) on the men’s side.
Teske, a former Northern Iowa Panther and Iowa Hawkeye national qualifier and a 2015 FDSH graduate, topped Austin Assad in the place match, 8-5.
Ex-Iowa national champion Spencer Lee was a runner-up in Teske’s bracket, falling in the finals by a 5-4 count to Luke Lilledahl.
