Surging Tritons head to Butler
EL DORADO, Kan. — Jesse Montalto has watched as his Iowa Central football team has evolved in a way that has become very familiar during his entire tenure.
The Tritons come into their regular season finale here Saturday riding a three-game winning streak as they take on 11th-ranked Butler.
Kick is set for 1:30 p.m. from BG Products Veterans Sports Complex.
Since a rough stretch that saw the Tritons (5-5 overall) go 1-5 with close losses to No. 1 Iowa Western, third-ranked Hutchinson and No. 9 Coffeyville, Montalto’s squad has reeled off wins over Ellsworth, Independence and Garden City to likely secure another spot in a December bowl.
“Our kids are feeling pretty good right now,” Montalto said. “They have been playing well and are feeling confident.
“We still have a chance at our goal of finishing above .500 so they are excited about this one.”
It was a thrilling first half vs. Garden City for the offenses, as they combined for 63 points. Iowa Central came out of the break and took over, scoring three consecutive times to take a 49-35 lead.
Cyncir Bowers rushed 20 times for 202 yards with three touchdowns, while Bryce Anderson caught six passes for 89 and a score. Jaquez Hall had two receiving TDs, while Tyler Smith and Ty Purdy combined to go 11-for-22 passing for 156 yards and three touchdowns.
Bowers, a freshman, is among the national leaders in rushing yards and all-purpose yards, averaging over 160 per game. He has 826 yards rushing and 11 TDs on the year.
Anderson, who holds an offer from Memphis but continues to receive other FBS interest, leads the team with 24 receptions and five TDs.
Smith and Purdy have thrown a combined 18 touchdowns against just three interceptions.
“The offense did a nice job vs. Garden City and our defense made some adjustments at halftime that worked,” Montalto said. “We know we are going to have to play very well this week in a tough environment against a very good team.”
Butler (6-3) remained perfect in league play with a 28-14 victory over Dodge City. They knocked off then-No. 1 Hutchinson in late October before falling to Iowa Western a week later.
Mason McHugh has thrown for 743 yards with seven touchdowns, Markellus Bass has 469 yards rushingand four scores and Cam Harris is the leading receiver with 20 receptions for 313 yards.
The Grizzlies are a perfect 4-0 all-time vs. Iowa Central, including a 45-10 victory last season.
