Garrigan plays for Dome spot
ALGONA — The Bishop Garrigan football team will be put to the test here Thursday night as they try to move one step closer to returning to the UNI-Dome.
The defending eight-player state champion Golden Bears host Edgewood-Colesburg in the quarterfinals.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Head coach Marty Wadle has Bishop Garrigan (10-0 overall) rolling once again, as they have now won 22 consecutive games dating back to last season. The Golden Bears have bested playoff opponents Riceville and Tripoli by a combined score of 109-27, and have scored at least 40 points in every game this season outside of a forfeit.
Tate Foertsch, who quarterbacked Garrigan to the crown last fall, has completed 66 percent of his throws for 957 yards with 16 touchdowns and just one interception. In two seasons under center, he has a 37-to-3 TD-to-interception ratio with 2,375 yards in the air.
After having his sophomore campaign cut short, Trayton Cink has rebounded, rushing for a team-high 989 yards with 22 scores. Ethan Marso, a 10th-grader, has 464 yards and 13 touchdowns while Foertsch has 278 and two.
Isaac DeLange, Kyle Bormann and Charlie McGregor all have over 100 yards rushing with eight touchdowns. Owen Murphy is the leading receiver, catching 14 passes for 302 while sophomore Michael Joyce has 16 for 241 and six TDs like Murphy.
The Bishop Garrigan defense, led by sophomore all-stater Keaton Helleseth, will be challenged by Pryce Rochford and an Edgewood-Colesburg (10-0) offense averaging 65 points per game.
Rochford, a senior, has 2,507 yards rushing and 45 touchdowns, adding another 740 yards and 13 scores with his arm. Carson Ingles has 743 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns while Christopher Lange is the leading receiver with 17 receptions for 376 and five scores.
The Vikings have 162 points in two postseason games, and have surpassed the 70-point mark five times.
The other matchups will pit Gladbook-Reinbeck at Don Bosco, Montezuma at Lenox and Audubon at Remsen St. Mary’s.
