Gaels play for state berth

The St. Edmond softball team is looking to make their own mark on school history.

The fourth-ranked Gaels (24-5 overall) are trying to become the first squad in the sport to earn back-to-back state appearances.

St. Edmond faces Saint Ansgar (22-9) in a Class 1A, Region 2 Final at Rogers Park on Monday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

The Gaels have been in six state tournaments overall, and lost two one-run games there last season. St. Edmond has also made the state tournament in 1987, 2006, 2010, 2013 and 2015.

The Gaels have compiled 24 victories and have only five losses — all to bigger class teams.

St. Edmond lost to No. 1 Van Meter (Class 2A), No. 1 North Polk (4A), No. 5 Waukee Northwest (5A) and No. 11 Urbandale (5A). They also lost to Linn-Mar (5A).

The Gaels enter the tournament on a 12-game win streak, coming off an 8-0 win over Bishop Garrigan.

St. Edmond junior Mariah Myers fifth in the state and second in Class 1A with 13 home runs. Wayne’s Izzie Moore (18) is the 1A leader.

Myers leads the state in slugging percentage (1.439) and is also third in 1A in batting (.621), and second in on base percentage (.725).

Sophomore Faith Shirbroun has blasted seven home runs and has driven in 28 runs. Senior Kaili Henning has 34 RBI and 35 hits while batting .389.

Eighth-grader Toryn Helle is hitting .368 with 30 RBI and 35 hits. Junior Lauren Gibb has 22 RBI and 35 hits.

Shirbroun (46) is the runs leader, followed by Myers (41), Gibb (38), and Helle (22).

Henning enters the pitching circle with a record of 15-3. She carries a 2.38 ERA and has struck out 149 batters.

The Saints have hit 17 home runs on the year and driven in 147 runs. Senior Lia Halfman has six home runs and has driven in 22 runs while batting .364. Makenna Norby (22), Josie Jahr (22) and Josie Juhl (21) are the saints RBI leaders.

Juhl is the leader in the circle for St. Ansgar with a record of 20-6. She has 189 strikeouts and carries a 1.24 ERA.
