HUMBOLDT — The sixth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond softball team came ready to play here Friday night.

Even minus a key piece of the attack, the Gaels dominated Humboldt, posting a 12-0 victory in five innings.

Faith Shirbroun had three hits with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored, Toryn Helle, Lauren Gibb and Hadley Oswald each added two hits, and Kaili Henning tossed a one-hitter, striking out nine.

“It was really good to see us put together a pair of back-to-back big innings at the plate,” SEHS head coach Bill Shirbroun said. “Anytime you can go on the road in the conference and get a win, it’s nice. We’re still adjusting and learning where we need to get better, but this was a step in the right direction.”

Shirbroun gave St. Edmond (8-0 overall, 4-0 in the North Central Conference) an early lead as she doubled, stole third and scored on a hit by Helle. In the third, Shirbroun again doubled, coming around on a passed ball after stealing third for a second time.

Henning drove in Helle to make it 3-0, and Shirbroun plated Myrah Lemon in the fourth after Lemon ran for Hadley Oswald after a single.

The issues started to multiple for the Wildcats in the fourth, as St. Edmond scored five runs with two outs. The Gaels added four more in the fifth to end the contest early.

Helle scored twice. Lemon finished with two runs, and Josie Harvey worked a pair of walks. Ansley Oswald, Helle, Gibb, Henning and Hadley Oswald each had an RBI, with Shirbroun stealing two bases and both Lemon and Harvey one.

All-state shortstop Mariah Myers missed the game after suffering an injury on Thursday night in a win over GTRA.

“We had to make some changes with our defense and order with Mariah out,” Shirbroun said. “I was proud of the girls for stepping up. And Kaili was dominant once again; she’s really been on and hitting her spots this year.”

For the Wildcats (4-5, 2-4), Claire Dielman had the lone base hit while two players reached on walks.

St. Edmond heads to the Van Meter Tournament on Saturday to conclude the week.
