Tritons move up at national golf

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Iowa Central women’s golf team took 24 strokes off their team total from the first round of play to the second here Wednesday at the NJCAA Div. II Championship.

The Tritons moved up one spot in the team standings from 13th to 12th, sitting just three shots back of ICCAC rival North Iowa Area. Another ICCAC school, Des Moines Area is 10th, as Shelton State remains the leader by nine shots over Murray State.

Okira Quintero shot an 82, placing her in a tie for 23rd overall. Azul Orantes is 48th, Syeda Laiba Shah is tied for 49th and Victoria Vertischel is tied for 71st.

“(Wednesday) was a lot more like it for our ladies,” ICCC head coach Kris Graewin said. “Laiba and Okira played very well, and Victoria played well for 14 holes. Now, it’s just getting them all together and playing their best golf.

“We’ve got two more days to make the most of our time and hopefully can grab an All-American accolade.”

Shah had the lone birdie on the day for Iowa Central, carding a three on the par-4 13th. She also had eight pars, carding the low round of the day with an 80.

Quintero recorded pars and Orantes had four.

Emma Bark of Shelton State and Kylee Lynn from Southern Union State are tied for the lead at 8-over. Lynn had the first round lead after shooting 2-under, but followed that up with a 10-over in the second round.

Third and fourth round play continues from the Ol’Colony Golf Course on Thursday and Friday.

Starting at $4.94/week.
