MARSHALLTOWN — For the second time this month, the Fort Dodge baseball team secured a sweep over Marshalltown.
Scores were 8-2 and 11-4 here on Monday.
In the opener, the Dodgers jumped on the board with a pair of runs in the first. With the score tied 2-all, Fort Dodge then plated five in the sixth to break the game open.
Junior Rylan Kingrey finished 3-for-4 with three runs. Kingrey and Dalton Eckley both had triples with Caiden Fraher recording a double.
Karch Smith and Jace Johnson each drove in two runs. Tru McBride, Eckley and Tanner Peterson all added an RBI.
“I thought we did a good job of jumping on them early,” FDSH head coach Blake Utley said. “They crawled back in both games, but we were able to have a big inning and put it back out of reach.
“It was good to see us hit the ball well all night.”
Sophomore Rylan Lara picked up the win, striking out three over six innings with just three hits allowed. Classmate Mason Frevert tossed a hitless inning, striking out one.
Fort Dodge (16-15 overall, 9-3 in the IAC North) plated runs in five innings of the nightcap, including three in the first and four in the fifth to distance itself from the Bobcats (4-25, 1-10). Junior Royce Pederson had two triples and a double, while Kingrey had a double and scored three times.
Pederson also scored three times and drove in three runs. Freshman Kolton Schiltz had two hits.
McBride, also a freshman, had a pair of RBI and both Smith and Schiltz stole a base.
Johnson worked three walks, with Smith, McBride and Peterson each recording two. Freshman Will McElroy earned the win, as McBride and Brayden Reimers combined for four scoreless innings in relief to back him up with four strikeouts.
“Rylan had a big game one and Royce hit the ball hard all night,” Utley said. “We went into the doubleheader hoping to save some of our pitching for later in the week, and we were able to do that.
“Lara had a great outing, Will was able to limit them and both Tru and Brayden came in and did a really nice job.”
The Dodgers return home on Tuesday, hosting Storm Lake at 7 p.m. They finish the week with a home doubleheader vs. Ames on Thursday.
