Tritons hammer Ellsworth twice, improve to 42-9
The No. 18 Iowa Central baseball team began the final homestand of the season with a sweep over Ellsworth here Friday at Rogers Park.
Scores were 16-6 in six innings and 15-3 in seven.
The Tritons (42-9 overall, 20-6 in the ICCAC) scored in all six innings of the opener, highlighted by an eight-run fifth. Sawyer Stein blasted two home runs, with Ben Jones, George McIntyre and Will Specht each hitting one.
Iowa Central was able to overcome a brief deficit with the big inning. Maddox Sullivan relieved starter Carter Giesen and recorded the final five outs — four of which came by strikeout.
McIntyre finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs. Specht and Stein each had three RBI, with Specht scoring three times and Stein twice.
Jones drove in a pair and scored twice on two outs, as Tate Perrin scored twice.
Giesen had 10 strikeouts in four-plus innings of work.
“We had a good day at the plate,” ICCC head coach Eric Stein said. “We got production from a number of guys and we were able to put together some big innings.
“We’ve still got a lot of work to do as we move towards the start of postseason play.”
In the nightcap, the Tritons plated six in the second, four in the fourth and five in the fifth. Bennett Burke had a two-homer game, with Stein and Jones each hitting another.
Wyatt Myers got in on the longball parade with a two-run shot.
Stein drove in five on three hits, scoring twice. Jones also had five RBI, with three hits and two runs scored. Specht scored three times.
Isaiah Brennan picked up the decision, working six with 11 strikeouts and just four hits allowed.
These two teams conclude the regular season back here on Saturday at noon for one game.
