Big weeks for ex-local talent Henning, Elsbecker
Two former local standouts have had memorable weeks competing in the American Rivers Conference.
St. Edmond graduate Kaili Henning tossed a perfect game for the Loras College softball team just days after Fort Dodge Senior High’s Eli Elsbecker had a six-RBI performance in a win for Coe College on the baseball diamond.
Henning, a sophomore, struck out seven without a single Buena Vista player reaching base in a 12-0 victory in five innings Friday afternoon. She recorded seven flyball outs and one groundball out, helping her own cause with two hits, two runs and an RBI.
An all-stater for the Gaels, Henning surpassed 200 strikeouts for the year. She is now 10-6 this season with an earned run average of 1.96 and 121 strikeouts in just over 110 innings pitched.
For her career, Henning is 20-12 with 205 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.39. She also leads the Duhawks at the plate this season, hitting .369 with a home run, 13 doubles, 24 RBI and 27 runs scored.
Loras (25-12 overall) returns to action next Friday when the league tournament kicks off.
Elsbecker’s big effort came in a 13-5 victory over Loras, helping the Kohawks secure the No. 2 in the upcoming conference tournament. The senior started things off with a solo home run and added a three-run single in the sixth.
He had a two-RBI single in the eighth, finishing -for-6 with a run scored and the six RBI.
On the year, Elsbecker is hitting .356 with three home runs, seven doubles and 35 RBI, scoring 29 runs while collecting 42 total hits. He also has a .854 fielding percentage while playing in the Coe infield.
In two seasons, Elsbecker has four home runs, 45 RBI and an average of .291.
The Kohawks (25-12) open play in the American Rivers Conference Tournament on Thursday against an opponent to be determined in Cedar Rapids.
