HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt baseball team showed their power at the plate here Friday night, hitting three home runs on their way to a 16-1 victory in four innings over St. Edmond.
Corey Dettmann was responsible for two of those homers, including a grand slam to lead the Wildcats (10-2 overall, 5-1 in North Central Conference). He finished 3-for-3 with six RBI and three runs scored.
Evan Hatcher also had a home run, driving in four, with Valley Davis plating a pair of runs. Mason Van Pelt and Keegan Groat each had two hits.
“They hit the ball well,” SEHS head coach Mike Szalat said. “They are a strong hitting team and they proved it.
“I thought we did a nice job of attacking at the plate. It just seemed like everything we hit hard, went right at them.”
Cyler Cirks earned the win on the mound for the Wildcats, striking out three over three-plus innings.
For the Gaels (5-3, 2-3), Kade Schlegel, Max Webster and Jack McElroy each had a hit. Koleman Hanson stole a base as McElroy finished things out on the mound.
“Jack battled his way through it,” Szalat said. “We had to leave him out there and have him work on his pitches. It’s tough to take your lumps this way but he did and it will help him for the future.”
St. Edmond returns to action Monday when they travel to Clarion-Goldfield/Dows.
