Dodgers take down No. 1 Waukee NW

WAUKEE — The third-ranked (Class 4A) Fort Dodge softball team pulled off a dramatic come-from-behind upset here Friday night.

Down 1-0 to No. 1 (5A) Waukee Northwest with three outs to go, the Dodgers plated a pair of runs in the seventh with two outs to claim a 2-1 victory.

“We flat-out played an incredible game,” FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. “I told the girls before that if we won, we’d call practice off (for Saturday). I honestly think they cheered louder for that than anything.

“I’m just so proud of them. This is why you do it. This is why you schedule games like this. It was just phenomenal and emotional.”

Lucy Porter retired the Wolves in order to close the door in the bottom of the seventh, retiring standout power hitter Sophia Schlader — an eighth-grader who already has nine home runs this season — on a harmless fly ball.

Porter started the rally in the top of the frame, reaching on an error. After moving to second on a sacrifice, the junior took third on a dropped third strike.

Freshman Calliegh Zimmermann then singled in Porter to tie it for Fort Dodge (12-2 overall).

After a base hit by sophomore Teryn Rippentrop moved pinch runner Maeleena Meyer to second, returning all-stater and standout freshman Hope Alstott drove Meyer in for the winning run.

“Lucy was just locked in and on fire with every single pitch,” Adams said. “Macy (Brown) had a perfect bunt, and Calliegh came up and smoked it to their shortstop.

“Teryn had a great hit, and Hope got it just down the line. I tell them all the time this is a game of inches, and that was the case (Friday night).”

Porter — a Minnesota State recruit — allowed just four hits and one earned run, striking out two while walking two. Alstott, Zimmermann and Rippentrop had the lone hits off Schlader, who struck out six and walked one for the Wolves (13-2).

Schlader carried a no-hitter into the seventh, but the Northwest lead was only 1-0.

The Wolves had scored 35 combined runs in their last three games, including 14-2 and 10-0 wins over West Des Moines Dowling while splitting with seventh-rated (5A) Ankeny.

“They had the bases loaded twice and we got out of it each time,” Adams said. “That definitely changed the momentum.

“The outfield stepped up and made some big defensive plays. I just could not be more proud of these girls.”

Fort Dodge returns to action Monday when they travel to 12th-ranked (5A) Ames for a doubleheader. The Dodgers welcome No. 5 (3A) Estherville-LC to Rogers Park on Tuesday before hosting their own invitational next Friday and Saturday.

Starting at $4.94/week.
