Bennett named mat coach at IC Regina

Former Fort Dodge Dodger champion will lead the Regals

IOWA CITY — Drew Bennett has always dreamed of being a wrestling coach.

That vision is coming to fruition for the former Fort Dodge state champion, who is taking over the Iowa City Regina program for the 2024-25 season.

The school named Bennett its new head coach on Friday. The ex-University of Northern Iowa and Iowa Hawkeye team member is 24 years old.

“I was interested in the coaching position at Regina because I know they are a well-respected school in a great community,” Bennett said. “I’d always wanted to coach after my wrestling career was over, and this position was a terrific opportunity to get started.

“I’m excited about it.”

Bennett, who is living in Iowa City, graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in interdepartmental studies of business. He earned minors in sports and recreation management, as well as human relations.

Bennett is currently a marketing specialist at Iridium Sports Agency.

Bennett was a two time bronze medalist for the Dodgers before winning a 132-pound title for FDSH’s traditional and dual state championship team in 2018. He competed for UNI from 2018-20, then transferred to Iowa, where he wrestled from 2021-23.

Bennett was an academic all-Big Ten honoree.

As a Dodger, Bennett won 153 career matches, versus just eight defeats.

“Drew’s extensive wrestling background, coupled with his interpersonal and communication skills, makes him a great fit for our coaching staff,” Regina activities director Taylor Hotek said. “We are confident that, under his leadership, our wrestling program will continue to grow and succeed on and off the mat.”

Starting at $4.94/week.
