N-F girls eye title round again

DES MOINES — The Newell-Fonda girls play for their fifth Class 1A championship round appearance since 2018 here Friday afternoon.

After knocking off Calamus-Wheatland on Wednesday, the second-ranked Mustangs (23-2 overall) meet No. 3 Remsen St. Mary’s (24-0) inside Wells Fargo Arena at 3:15 p.m.

The winner between the Mustangs and Hawks gets either top-ranked North Linn (24-1) or No. 4 Council Bluffs St. Albert (23-1) Saturday at 7 p.m.

Newell-Fonda has secured four state championships already, including three straight from 2019-21. They also reached the finals in 2018 and last season, falling to Bishop Garrigan.

Overall, the Mustangs have secured 31 wins at state and would move into sole possession of second behind only Ankeny with a win over Remsen St. Mary’s, who is in the final four for a second consecutive season.

Senior Kierra Jungers and junior Kinzee Hinders each average over 15 points per game on the year. The duo combined to go 11-for-19 from the field with 29 points and 12 rebounds in the quarterfinals.

The Hawks knocked off Martensdale-St. Marys to advance and are led by 1,000-point career scorers Carmindee Ricke, Whitney Jensen and Mya Bunkers. All three average at least 12 points per game.
