Jace Ulrich could feel a performance like Saturday coming.

The former Fort Dodge Senior High standout belted a pair of home runs during the nightcap of another sweep for the fourth-ranked Iowa Central baseball team at Rogers Park on Saturday.

Behind nine homers, the Tritons took care of Lake Region State, 16-0 and 14-0. Sunday’s planned game was scrapped due to weather conditions.

Ulrich was joined by Eric Nuno who also hit two home runs in the game. Griffin Fenske added another, with Michael Siemer, Will Smoot, Jack Mausser and Jake Busson all going deep in the opener for the red-hot Tritons.

“It was a good day to get settled back in,” Ulrich said. “My swing felt great, the approach is there and I finally got some pitches I could do damage with. I have been hungry to put some stats up with my name.

“(Saturday) was a great opportunity to that.”

A sophomore, Ulrich is part of a group of experienced players who have helped Iowa Central (22-0 overall) extend the best start in program history. They have now scored at least 10 runs in 11 consecutive games.

“One thing I always reflect on is my great teammates,” Ulrich said. “We have such a large group of guys, and to know I have all of them in my corner at all times makes this challenging game much easier.

“Our team meshes well and it’s a tell-tale sign of why this program is so successful. To have as much talent as the Tritons do mix with a bunch of competitive guys who have each other’s backs; come game day, we are a well-oiled winning machine.”

Ian Culver and Ryan Ohm each picked up wins on the mound. Culver struck out five in three innings with Ohm recording seven strikeouts in five innings of work.

Josh Hatano had a three-hit game and Ulrich drove in four. Nuno and Siemer each had three-RBI games.

After putting together an all-state career with the Dodgers, Ulrich has continued to find success in his hometown at the ballpark daily.

“I have loved these two years of playing for one of the best college baseball teams in the country and I’m very excited for what’s left to accomplish as a program,” Ulrich said. “I would also love to give a big thanks to all of the Fort Dodge community for the endless love and support.

“I love being a Triton, but I’ll forever be a Dodger.”

Iowa Central concludes a 12-game homestand on Wednesday when they open ICCAC play against Southwestern. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
