Area athletes compete at Drake

DES MOINES — Rachel Schany and Madison Ehrig got things rolling here Thursday for the area at the Drake Relays.

Schany, a sophomore from Emmetsburg, tied for 11th in the high jump and Ehrig, a senior from Algona, finished tied for 15th. Panorama’s Jaidyn Sellers, a University of Iowa softball commit, won the event by clearing 5-foot-7 on her second attempt.

Making her second appearance at the Drake Relays, Schany easily went over 5-1 to begin. On her third and final attempt, she cleared 5-3, but was unable to get over the bar at 5-5.

Last year, Schany tied for seventh in this event inside Drake Stadium.

Ehrig also cleared 5-1 but went out of the competition at 5-3.

Kiersten Fisher was 17th in the Heptathlon competing for Iowa State. The former Southeast Valley standout was fifth in the 100 hurdles and long jump, while finishing 11th in the shot put and javelin.

Sydney Willits, also representing the Cyclones, was entered in the Heptathlon and won the long jump. She is the daughter of Fort Dodge Senior High grad Christie (Long) Willits and granddaughter of former Dodger teachers Fran and Barb Long.

Fisher did not do the other three events while Willits only attempted a throw in the javelin.

Spencer Moon, a former South Central Calhoun all-stater, was 12th in the 1,500. The Simpson runner clocked a time of 3:50.75 that saw him finish fifth in his heat and place ahead of athletes from Indiana State, Drake, Purdue and Iowa State.

Tina Samson placed fourth in the Heptathlon, scoring just over 5,000 points. She was third in the high jump, fourth in the 200 and finished sixth in the shot put, long jump and javelin.

Jed Elmbarki was second in his heat of the Steeplechase, placing ninth overall with a time of 9:00.73. The Triton men’s 4×800 of Antonio Tshimanga, Trevon Prince, Seon Booker and Jadon Boots finished 15th in 8:07.81.

On Friday, Mariah Myers of St. Edmond and Ashlyn Works from Humboldt will be in action in the discus. Schany returns for the long jump with Algona’s Max Nevitt (shot put) and West Bend-Mallard’s Maddie Fehr (100-meter dash) also competing.
