Slow start hurts FD boys

MASON CITY — The Fort Dodge boys basketball team struggled in the first half and couldn’t catch Mason City on Tuesday night.

The Riverhawks (3-15 overall) built a 42-19 lead at the half and ended up splitting the season series with the Dodgers (4-15) with an 86-61 victory.

After scoring only 19 points in the first half, the Dodgers did put together a 42-point second half.

Fort Dodge was unable to connect from behind the three-point line in the opening 16 minutes, but drained four triples in the final two stanzas.

Four Dodgers reached double figures, led by Drake Warland. The Dodger junior had 17 points.

Carter Woodruff had 12, while Cade Westherhoff and Tytrell Mosley had 10 points each.

Fort Dodge won the first meeting 60-55 in the Dodger gym.

Mason City was led by Marcele Whitner’s 23 points and Drayden Witt added 12. Whitner had 16 points in the opening quarter.

The Dodgers are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Des Moines East, looking for the season sweep. The Dodgers will finish the regular season on Monday when they host Des Moines North in a boys only game at 6:15 p.m.
