Gael boys rally to top Eagle Grove

Hunter Horn’s block of a potential game-tying 3-pointer finished off a thrilling rally for the St. Edmond boys here Monday night.

The Gaels overcame a double-digit lead to down Eagle Grove, 55-52.

Horn scored 19 points with 16 rebounds, five blocks and two steals, while Sam Mericle added 17 points.

For the Eagles, Jaxon Morris knocked down seven triples and had a game-high 25.

“We did a lot of the little things that added up to a big win,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “We took all of those things that we have been working on and learning from throughout the season and used them to our advantage.

“We struggled with their zone, but we did enough to get the job done.”

St. Edmond (8-8 overall) outscored Eagle Grove (8-8) in the final quarter, 18-7. Horn gave them the lead at 51-49 with 90 seconds to play after sinking a baby hook, but Morris answered right back with his third triple of the half.

Jack McElroy’s jumper through the Eagle defense made it 53-52 in favor the Gaels, who knocked down a pair of free throws to seal their 11th consecutive win in the battle of former North Central Conference rivals.

“That is a really good team and Morris can shoot it,” Kochendorfer said. “We had to overcome some struggles and find a way there late. I was proud of the them and it was good to see us finish the job.”

Following a tough 1-3 stretch, the Gaels now head into another busy week with momentum.

“It’s huge to get this one and give us the confidence we need,” Kochendorfer said. “It helps when you play well even in defeats, but what you gain in wins is what really helps build that confidence up.”

Drake Canavan added 13 points and six rebounds with Tyreon Franklin chipping in nine points and four steals for the Eagles, who have dropped four of their last five.

St. Edmond will head to Iowa Falls-Alden on Tuesday while Eagle Grove hosts North Union.
