Benedict places fifth

CORALVILLE — Mariaha Benedict may only be a sophomore, but after this weekend the Dodger 135-pounder is going to be known around the state.

Early in the season, Benedict has put together an impressive run and capped it with a fifth place performance at the Dan Gable Donnybrook on Friday.

Senior Maddie Pulis (170) placed seventh. Lucy Porter (11th), Macy Brown (12th), Gracie Harvey (13th), Alejandra Manzanilla (14th), Delaney O’Connor (17th) and Araya Fellers (23rd) also placed for Fort Dodge.

“We placed 23rd (out of 43 teams) with nine girls,” said Fort Dodge head coach Jon Koenig. “So all the girls who placed, whether it be 11th, 13th or 17th, helped us as a team.

“Each bracket was packed with close to 30 kids.”

Benedict (19-2) pinned McKenzie Tollefson (13-2) of Decorah in 4:32 of the quarterfinals. During the tournament she also had falls in eight seconds, 3:28 and 38 seconds.

“She (Benedict) did exactly what she wanted to in that match,” Koenig said. “She is ranked sixth and beat the girl that is ranked ahead of her. Mariaha is using those things as motivation and that was her mentality the entire tournament.”

Pulis (14-6), ranked sixth, lost her third round consolation match by fall, but ended with a pin over Reece Shrader (12-5) of Bettendorf, 2:48 in the seventh place match.

“She has been adjusting to moving up to 170 from 155 and that has helped her,” Koenig said. “She has the same game plan and is taking one tournament at a time and working on the little things.”

Porter (145) won three matches and ended with an 8-1 decision over Grace Rinehart (12-5) of Raccoon River-Northwest.

After losing in the first round of 140 pounds, O’Connor (11-9) rolled through the backside, winning four straight matches. She had three falls and a decision win.

“Delaney is capable of doing what she did,” Koenig said. “She is working on those little things.”

Harvey (110) earned her 14th win of the season with a fall over Paige Cemensen of Vinton-Shellsburg. She had three wins in the tournament.

Fellers (115), who lost in the prelims, finished the tournament with three victories.

Manzanilla (105) and Brown (130) had two wins each in the tournament.

The Dodgers are back in action on Tuesday when they compete at Waverly-Shell Rock.
