Iowa in fifth place

DETROIT, Mich. — Six Iowa wrestlers advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals, as Penn State has the early lead in the title chase.

Austin DeSanto (133), Max Murin (149), Alex Marinelli (165), Michael Kemerer (174), Jacob Warner (197) and Tony Cassioppi (285) all won two matches in the opening rounds of tournament action.

Penn State is leading the current team standings with 27.5 points. Arizona State (22) is next in line. North Carolina State is currently in third (21.5), while Michigan (21.0) and Iowa (20.5) round out the Top-5.

Penn State has six in the quarterfinals and three on the backside. The Sun Devils have five quarterfinalists, while the Wolfpack and Wolverines have four and seven respectively.

DeSanto (17-3), the fifth-seed will face four-seed Korbin Myers (20-1) of Virginia Tech, while Murin (14-3), the eight, will wrestle top-seed Yianni Diakomihalis (25-0) of Cornell.

No. 3 Marinelli’s next opponent will be sixth-seed Cameron Amine (18-5) of Michigan. Kemerer (11-2), the fifth seed, will face off with fourth-seed Hayden Hidlay (16-2) of North Carolina State.

No. 6 Warner (19-5) will compete against No. 3 Eric Schultz (18-2) of Nebraska.

In the heavyweight match, it will be Iowa’s three-seed Cassioppi (17-2) against six-seed Jordan Wood (24-2) of Lehigh.

Northern Iowa’s fourth-seed Parker Keckeisen (26-1) advanced to the quarterfinals with a major decision.

Keckeisen will now face fifth-seed Bernie Truax (17-1) of Cal Poly.

Iowa State’s David Carr (22-1) the top-seed, lost his first match of the season, in a tie-breaker to Oregon State’s Hunter Willits.
