Iowa Central pins Iowa Western

For Iowa Central wrestling coach Luke Moffitt, the season-long quest to nationals is always first and foremost on his mind.

After Wednesday night’s victory over Iowa Western, Moffitt can focus all his attention on April.

The ninth-ranked Tritons rode seven wins to a commanding 32-10 victory over the No. 5 Reivers at Hodges Fieldhouse in the regular-season finale for Iowa Central (3-4 overall, 3-3 in ICCAC).

Aidan Harris, Bret Minor, Phil Smith Jr., Andrew Gamble, Keaton Geerts, Nolan Miller-Johnston and Jorden Pryor all had their hands raised in victory by Fort Dodge Senior High graduate Bill Reed, who served as the official in charge.

“We’ve really turned a corner here lately,” Moffitt said. “The guys have been buying in to the approach and plan. Now we have four weeks to really get after it.

“That means working on cutting weight better, managing our weight better and more technique with them so we can have our best finish possible at nationals.”

In an interesting year from the start, the Tritons will not compete again until April 21-22 in Council Bluffs at the NJCAA Championships. The North Central District Tournament was held on March 7 with Iowa Central placing second.

“We’ve battled through some things and I feel like we are in a good place right now,” Moffitt said. “With how the season went and was set up, we kind of have a plan to go by with this much time off.”

Harris, a freshman from Utah, earned a second-period pin vs. Connor Attkisson at 125 pounds to start the meet. After a setback by Couy Weil, the Tritons reeled off five consecutive wins from Minor, Smith, Gamble, Geerts and Miller-Johnston.

Minor claimed a first-period pin at 141 pounds, Smith won by technical fall at 149, Gamble picked up a decision at 157, Geerts a fall in 69 seconds at 165 and Miller-Johnston a 5-4 decision.

“Aidan really set the tone,” Moffitt said. “He’s been coming along and made a lot of strides here late. We knew what he was capable of, and he’s showing us now.”

Chuy Gutierrez and Hugo Harp suffered a pair of losses before Pryor capped off the night with a decision at heavyweight.

Since starting the season 0-4 including a loss to Div. I Iowa State, the Tritons have won their last three duals by a combined score of 115-32.
