FD’S TRIPLE THREAT

Schreier tallies three 3Bs, goes 6-for-6 with 6 RBI in opener

DES MOINES — Tyler Schreier and the Fort Dodge baseball team stayed in an offensive rhythm on Wednesday at Des Moines Lincoln.

Unfortunately for the Dodgers, it only resulted in a split.

After a 14-7 victory in the opener, FDSH came up short in the nightcap, surrendering two late runs in an 8-6 setback.

“We had a big first game and scored right away (in the second contest), but we just didn’t keep the momentum going after that,” Dodger head coach Blake Utley said. “It would’ve been nice to win them both, but Lincoln is talented and they outplayed us for a lot of (the nightcap). We had a nice rally (four runs in the top of the sixth to tie the score), but we didn’t quite have enough in the tank.”

Schreier, a junior speedster, was everywhere in the opener. The lead-off centerfielder tripled twice, had a pair of singles, and added two bunt base hits. Schreier also drove in six runs.

“Tyler makes things happen. He’s an electric player,” Utley said. “He gives our lineup a new gear.”

Schreier legged out his third triple of the evening to start the second game, then scored on an RBI single by Nick Bice.

“To have three triples in one doubleheader is pretty amazing,” Utley said. “Tyler was really on the ball. It’s taken him a little bit of time to get back into the swing of things (Schreier missed the 2019 campaign), but now he’s swinging a hot bat. And he’s just calm and cool out there — never too high or too low.”

Mason Bockoven had a pair of doubles and drove in two. Carson Peterson was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Nick Bice added two hits and scored twice. Nelson Cone contributed two hits and scored twice as well. Jace Ulrich drove in two.

Drake Callon notched the victory in the opener, working four innings and allowing only a single earned run. He struck out four.

“Drake did a solid job overall,” Utley said. “He was consistently around the zone. That’s huge. He’s just a sophomore, but you can see him gaining confidence and growing into his role.”

Fort Dodge (7-5 overall) plated seven runs in the first inning to take command. The Railsplitters (6-8) did reduce the deficit to 9-7 late before the Dodgers delivered the five-run knockout punch in the top of the seventh.

Lincoln responded to the early run by scoring six times in the first and second innings of the nightcap. Trailing 6-2 in the sixth, FDSH did fight back to knot things up at 6.

“It kind of felt like it was only a matter of time before we responded with that breakthrough inning, but it came a little too late,” Utley said. “It was frustrating (to split), because the opportunity was there to get them both. We just weren’t consistent enough (to take two).”

The Dodgers finished the doubleheader with 20 runs and 24 hits.

Fort Dodge returns to action on Thursday, facing Des Moines North at McNeil Field for Senior Night. The Dodgers will honor their senior class before the second contest.
