Rodriguez places third for FD

MARSHALLTOWN — The Fort Dodge girls tennis team was in action here Monday at a Class 2A regional meet.

Manuela Rodriguez placed third for the Dodgers in singles, battling back after falling in the semifinals to earn bronze.

Rodriguez, a sophomore, earned a straight-set win over Lauren Chen of Ames in the quarterfinals. She was bested by Janet Toe of Waterloo West in the semis before topping Jiwen Li of Ames for third.

“Manuela did a nice job of coming back and focusing on getting third,” FDSH head coach Julie Astor said. “It wasn’t the outcome she wanted but it was good to see her play well in her last match.”

Grace Behrens picked up a victory in singles before falling to eventual winner Mackenzie Sagers of Cedar Falls.

“Grace really played well,” Astor said. “She was right there in several points with Sagers, who is a very good player.”

Sydney Gebers and Kaitlyn Folsom, along with Janelle Derrig and Lacey Larson, were in doubles for the Dodgers, who head to Sioux City East on Friday for team regionals.
