Triton Quintero places in the Top-20 at nationals
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Iowa Central women’s golf team wrapped up play here Friday at the NJCAA Div. II Championship.
Okira Quintero earned a Top-20 finish, tying for 19th overall after her round of 81. She had a strong back-nine, recording one birdie with five pars to card a 37.
Syeda Laiba Shah tied for 34th overall and Azul Orantes tied for 53rd. Victora Verstichel had to withdraw from the tournament in the fourth and final round, leaving the Tritons in 15th overall.
Shelton State maintained the lead throughout, earning the national championship by 12 strokes over Murray State. Wallace State placed a distant third, as ICCAC schools Des Moines Area (10th) and North Iowa Area (11th) were also in action.
Mallory Brooks of Wallace State and Katie Hallmark from Shelton State each finished tied atop the individual leaderboard, as Brooks moved there with a round of 1-under on Friday.
Quintero was 11 strokes from making it into the Top-10.
The Iowa Central men’s golf team will now prepare for national tournament action, as they head to Plymouth, Ind. and Swan Lake Resort starting Tuesday for four rounds of play.
