Henning leads Loras past No. 4 Trine
ANGOLA, Ind. — Kaili Henning and the Loras College softball team continue to make history.
Henning recorded seven strikeouts to help the Duhawks claim a 14-6 six-inning victory over the 24th-ranked University of Rochester at the NCAA Div. III Tournament on Thursday. The win marked the first-ever in the postseason for Loras, who is in the national tournament for the first time.
The reigning American Rivers Conference Pitcher of the Year and an all-stater while at St. Edmond, Henning and the Duhawks (31-14 overall) followed that victory up by blanking No. 4 and host Trine University on Friday, 2-0, to advance to the Angola Regional final.
Henning worked five innings vs. Rochester, allowing seven hits with the seven strikeouts and three walks to earn the win inside the circle. She also had a double and scored a run while batting leadoff for Loras.
After falling behind 1-0 in the second, the Duhawks broke things open with four runs in the third and added two more in the fourth. They ended the contest early with eight runs in the sixth, recording 15 hits on the day.
Henning sat Rochester down in order to open the contest, needing just four pitches to end the inning. She also had a quick fifth, working around a pair of walks without allowing a run, striking out one.
She was even better vs. Trine, going the distance while allowing just three hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Henning needed just 90 pitches to secure her 15th win this season.
Henning gave up a hit to start the first and second innings, but pitched her way out of it, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the second. She pitched a perfect 1-2-3 frame in the third, fifth and sixth innings, retiring 10 of the last 12 batters she faced.
“I feel like all of my pitches were on the money,” Henning said during the post-game press conference. “Everything I was throwing was working and the defense behind me was spectacular like always.
“I owe all of what I accomplish to them.”
Both runs for the Duhawks came in the fourth when Laurissa Klapatauskas singled in Bailey Welu and Ava Franklin with two outs.
Loras will now wait to face either Rochester or Trine on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Duhawks need just one more win to advance to the Super Regional.
