DES MOINES — Fort Dodge’s boys 4×200-meter relay picked the perfect time to go low on Friday at the state meet.

Sophomore Tyler Schreier, junior Asle Thorson, junior Brycen Bell and junior Tysen Kershaw picked up a medal in the 4×200 meter relay, placing fifth with a quartet-best mark of 1:28.88. West Des Moines Valley set a new record to win it in 1:26.17.

“It was an awesome opportunity to compete with the fastest guys in the state,” Thorson said. “Track is a grind, but getting a medal makes it all worth it.”

Schreier, Bell, Sam Daniel and Kershaw also came back to qualify for the 4×100 finals with the fifth-fastest time at 42.34.

“It was a great opportunity to run and compete with everyone,” Bell said. “Both our 4×2 and 4×1 did great beating our best times for both events. We are looking forward to running the finals and seeing how high we can place.”

Kacee Gollob completed her high school career with a 13th place showing in the 4A shot put with a career-best throw of 35-11.

“I was really nervous all week, but as soon as I got to state, my nerves vanished,” Gollob said. “It reminded me of some of the my national volleyball tournaments I’ve been to and it made me feel comfortable.

“I’m really glad I didn’t get too worked up.”

FDSH head coach Todd Constable said it was “great to see” Gollob go out on a high note.

“As a senior, to jump 11 spots from her qualifying (throw) and have a PR down here … she took advantage of an opportunity and made the most of it,” Constable said. “She did an awesome job with the pressure on.”

The Dodger senior and future Iowa Central volleyball player was the final at-large qualifier out of districts for the event. She had set a personal-best mark at districts last week.

“It was amazing and a great experience,” she said. “I loved every second of it. Being in a stadium full of the best of the best makes you feel amazing. Add in doing your best … it’s indescribable.”
