Perfect conditions greeted golfers here Wednesday at Lakeside Golf Course for the CYO Tournament.

Carroll Kuemper fired a 312 to claim the boys overall title with Sioux City Heelan scoring gold in the girls race.

The St. Edmond boys placed fifth overall, and the girls were sixth. Jack McElroy led the way for the Gaels with a ninth-place performance after carding an 84.

Ty Mericle was 15th, Hayden Derrig 18th, Landon Saathoff 22nd and Kinnick Henning 23rd overall.

“It was just a beautiful day and the kids played really well,” SEHS boys head coach Matt Dillon said. “These are some of the best teams in the state, and we were right there with them.

“We had a lot of (varsity-best), scores and all six guys came in under 50 for their nine hole totals. I’m tickled pink with our performance, but know there is still a lot of room for improvement.”

Dawson Barthole of Le Mars Gehlen, which finished second to Kuemper, had the low round of the day with a 70. Knight teammates Maverick Schwabe and Braxton Vonnahme were right behind.

Bishop Garrigan placed third overall, led by Ethan Kuper and Ben Greteman. Kuper had a 76 to finish fourth. Greteman carded an 81 to place fifth.

Coming off a strong showing in a North Central Conference triangular with Clear Lake and Clarion-Goldfield/Dows on Tuesday, Dillon was pleased with the improvements he continues to see.

“The NCC is a strong golf conference and I thought we did a great job there competing,” Dillon said. “We’ve just got to eliminate the double and triple bogeys. I can live with bogeys and pars, but we are just struggling as a collective team too much with chipping and putting.

“We’ll have a bad chip and three-putt from there at crucial times. If we can eliminate that, I like our chances moving forward.”

Elsa Tiefenthaler from Carroll Kuemper carded an 84 to best Bishop Garrigan’s Avery Lichter for medalist honors on the girls’ side by a stroke. Hannah Merron from Garrigan was one of three golfers who fired a round of 94.

For the Gaels, Ellie Driscoll had a 101 to lead the way, followed by Kara McGonegle’s 108. Nora Lee (123), Madison Hepperle (140) and Izabella Meyer (145) rounded out the scoring.

“It was a beautiful day for golf,” SEHS girls head coach Kelsey Felch said. “Ellie had four pars and posted a good score. Kara improved tremendously with her 18-hole score from previous seasons.

“The girls have done a lot of work to get where they are. I’m proud of the effort they put in.”

Next action for St. Edmond will be Friday when the boys travel to Webster City and the girls host the Lynx.
