It was all about redemption on Wednesday night for the fourth-ranked Iowa Central wrestling team against No. 7 Iowa Lakes inside Hodges Fieldhouse.
In the last meeting between the two schools earlier this season, the Lakers (4-1 ICCAC) earned a decisive 27-9 victory with seven wins.
On Wednesday night, the Tritons (4-1) won seven matches and claimed a resounding 32-12 triumph.
“This was a rematch from November, where I was more embarrassed than ever. Our guys looked completely flat,” said Iowa Central head coach Luke Moffitt. “It’s fun when you attack and score like this.
“We’re usually a second-half team anyway, and after getting embarrassed last time in my hometown (of Estherville), it was key for us to turn this thing around.”
Out of the 10 weights, there were eight different outcomes this time, with the Tritons coming out on the positive end of six of those matches. Iowa Central earned bonus points in four of their seven wins. They also took three matches over higher-ranked opponents.
The Tritons lost the first match of the night, but came back with five consecutive wins to build a 29-3 lead.
Eighth-ranked Yar Aldiva (149) earned a 4-3 sudden victory over seventh-ranked Trachy Davis — a match he had lost earlier in sudden victory.
The highlight of the night was Iowa Lakes’s top-ranked David Hollingsworth against No. 2 Ethan Karsten. In the first meeting, Hollingsworth picked up an 8-2 decision.
This time around it was all Karsten, who earned a 15-0 technical fall in a little over four minutes at 157.
“Last time out, Ethan was having trouble managing his weight,” Moffitt said. “He did a better job of that and you saw that on the mat. He went out there and dominated, wrestling like he can.
“He was attacking the whole match. After that, all the guys were fired up.”
Iowa Central’s unranked Travis Willers (165) pinned seventh-ranked Evyn Insalaco in 6:15 after losing before.
Third-rated Ashton Eyler earned another win over No. 4 Bumni Smith at 174 pounds. Smith was disqualified from the match for improper conduct with Eyler leading 10-2.
Brian Stanford picked up a tight 10-9 win over Marcus Placide at 184 after losing to Iowa Lakes in the last dual.
Top-ranked Tyree Sutton (197) made easy work of Terron Robinson, earning the fall in 2:29. Sutton sat out of the last dual that Iowa Central lost.
The Tritons gave up a forfeit at 125. Josh Garcia then logged an overtime victory over Avery Holder at 133 after giving up a fall to Iowa Lakes last time.
“He (Garcia) stuck to the gameplan,” Moffitt said. “He stayed with him the entire match.”
Fort Dodge Senior High graduate Damond Lockner lost 7-3 at 141, and heavyweight Gunner Cash lost 6-5 to Mitchell Williamson.
Iowa Central is back in action on Saturday at the Worthington Open. Action begins at 9 a.m.
