FD City Council election process begins

Voters to pick five council members

For the second time this year, Fort Dodge voters will be heading to the polls for a City Council election.

This fall’s general election comes just months after a Feb. 7 special election to pick someone to complete the unexpired term of former Councilman Neven Conrad, who resigned in October 2022 after being named the magistrate for Humboldt County.

Councilwoman Megan Secor won that race. The at-large seat she holds is on the ballot for the Nov. 7 general election, and the winner will serve a full four-year term. Secor has said previously that she would seek the full term.

Voters will also pick council members to represent each of the four wards. The incumbents are Terry Moehnke in Ward 1, Cameron Nelson in Ward 2, Dave Flattery in Ward 3 and Kim Alstott in Ward 4. None of them have publicly declared their intentions for this year’s election.

Council members elected to represent the wards serve two-year terms.

Candidates may file nominating petitions in the City Clerk’s office in the Municipal Building beginning Monday. All petitions must be filed by 5 p.m. Aug. 31.

Each candidate’s nominating petitions must be signed by a specific number of residents, based on how many votes were cast for that seat in the last election.

Candidates seeking the at-large seat must get 29 signatures.

Candidates in Wards 1, 2 and 3 must get 10 signatures.

Candidates in Ward 4 must get 13 signatures.

Ward candidates must get their petitions signed by residents of their specific wards. At-large candidates can get signatures from residents anywhere in the city limits.

If more than two candidates get on the ballot for any council seat, a primary election will be held on Oct. 10 to reduce the field to two.

Nominating petitions and affidavits of candidacy can be picked up at the City Clerk’s office in the Municipal Building, 819 First Ave. S.
